Industrial synthesis process of gamma-Butyrolactone product

There are a variety of synthesis methods of gamma-Butyrolactone product, the raw materials of production are 1,4- butylene glycol, maleic anhydride, furfural, olefin, and etc. However, industrial synthesis of gamma-Butyrolactone product mainly have two methods, dehydrogenation of 1,4-butanediol with acetylene and formaldehyde as raw materials(that is Reppe method) and maleic anhydride hydrogenation method using maleic anhydride as raw material.

Repper method adopts more process routes, the production cost depends mainly on the source of raw material acetylene,its process is simple, mature and easy to obtain raw materials. The disadvantage is that acetylene under high pressure is flammable and explosive, the catalyst efficiency is low, and the equipment investment cost is high. Compared with the traditional repper method, the esterification of maleic anhydride hydrogenation process (Davy process) has low production cost, and also can achieve the coproduction of BDO, GBL and THF. According to the market demand, we can flexibly adjust the proportion of BDO, GBL and THF. What’s more, from the aspects of raw material sources and technical economy, Davy process is also the most competitive process for producing BDO, GBL and THF.
